Big performance from the Stars away to Chepstow; unlucky not to come away with a win

The Stars made a 45 minute bus trip down to Chepstow and started with a bang. Chepstow looked the side who had just made a long bus trip and not the Stars. After the first 30 minutes the Stars had scored 2 unconverted tries from driving mauls both scored by Gavin McDonnell. Chepstows only reply was a converted penalty. The Stars then fell a sleep and let Chepstow in for 2 tries just before half time making the score 15-10 to Chepstow.

The Stars didn't start the second half too well and let Chepstow in for another 2 tries one was an interception try from Chepstows 10 meter line. This made the score 27-10. The Stars then showed huge character and took the game to Chepstow and from another driving maul Gavin McDonnell picked the ball up and dived over the line only for the ref to give a penalty try under the posts. Nathan Hughes successfully kicked the conversation making the score 27-17. The Stars piled the pressure on Chepstow and spent the last 10 minutes in Chepstows 22. Eventually Ross Martin broke from yet another driving maul and ran at least 5 meters to dive over in the corner to the cheers of the Stars supporters. Nathan failed to convert the conversion which was the last kick of the game making the score 27-22. The Stars deserved to come away with at least 2 bonus points but it could have been a win.

The Stars forwards were again outstanding especially the back 5 who were fantastic. Chepstow could not compete at the line out which the Stars dominated throughout the game. In fairness when Chepstow backs did get their hands on the ball they did look dangerous but the stars backs defended courageously especially Nathan Hughes, Mike Jones and Kieren Woods. Scrum half Callum Williams also made a nuisance of himself throughout the game.

The man of the match however was number 8 Gavin McDonnell for another committed display scoring an hat trick of tries. His January no alcohol policy is certainly paying off.

Stars next game is home to Monmouth.
