Blackwood-born Owen Rhys Williams began his rugby career playing for the Blackwood RFC junior division at the age of eleven.

Whilst playing for the Youth team, Owen was struck down with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which left him unable to play for some two seasons.

In 2007, his health improved, and he linked up with the Blackwood senior team, impressing with his pace and his towering frame. Pontypridd visited Glan-yr-Afon Park in February 2008 during the Konica Minolta Cup campaign, where Owen gave a stand-out performance for the opposition.

The Pontypridd team management saw a player brimming with potential and duly drafted Owen on permit for the rest of the 2007/08 season- a season which saw him start for Ponty in the Konica Minolta Cup Final.

During the close season, Owen was given a chance to sign for Pontypridd permanently, and to fully make his mark in the Premiership.

Early 2011 saw Owen given the opportunity to stake a claim with the Wales Sevens Development Team, and bringing his leadership skills to the fore, Owen captained the team during their FIRA-AER tournament in Spain.

At the conclusion of a fine season for club and player alike, Owen was nominated as Pontypridd RFC Player of the Year 2011.

Owen is a mathematics teacher at Ferndale Comprehensive School in the Rhondda
