Match Report
10 May 2016 / Team News

Stars travel to Newport HSOB for their last away SWALEC league game of the season.

The last time the two sides met it was a very close game with HSOB victors by 10-7. The Stars did not have a good day at the office that day and really should have won the game.

The players were in confident mood after the last couple of good performances especially the heroics in their earlier mid-week match against Abercarn when they narrowly lost to the potential league champions.

The sun was shining and the conditions were perfect for running rugby and the Stars did not disappoint. From the off the Stars showed their intention to run the heavy HSOB forwards around the pitch. Outside half Nathan Hughes dictated the game extremely well, Josh Thomas organised the midfield both in attack and defence and once again the Stars pack were outstanding. Loose head prop Marc Bolton showed good commitment by playing the last 20 minutes despite not being fully fit.

Four tries were scored by Tom Burriss, Marc Williams, Nathan Hughes and Tom Hamer. The try scored by Tom Burriss was probably the best try the Stars had scored all season; the ball was moved along the back line putting wing Gregor Oliver half clear, he carried the ball and took on the inside cover managing to slip the ball inside to the supporting Tom Burriss, who was earlier involved in the movement, to score the try.

Another good try was scored by Nathan Hughes; Rhys Hallett was put clear on the half way line and used outstanding acceleration to get past the covering defence and then unselfishly passed inside to the supporting Nathan Hughes to score under the posts when he could have easily scored himself.

The Stars were again thankful to Blackwood for agreeing permits for ex Stars players Lewis Gerrard, Tom Moss and Tom Hamer all of whom played extremely well. This was Tom Hamers 5th game in 2 weeks and he still had enough energy to power over the try line to score a try. The club is very grateful to these boys for turning up.

A number of players put their hands up for player of the match however it was decided to give Captain Mathew Dix man of the match for the constant disruption he caused at the breakdown.

The final score was 26-10 to the Stars. The bonus point win ensures the Stars will again play in league 3A east next season. Well done to all players, coaches and committee.

Stars together stronger.
