This was the first game Blackwood Stars had played in the Ben Francis Cup. The club are proud and privileged to be part of this very old cup competition which has been won by illustrious clubs in the past and shows the progress the club has made over the last 10 years.
The Stars were eagerly looking forward to playing Pontypool Utd on this mild Autumn evening. Pontypool Utd are an established club within division 2 east and this game would be an huge step up for the Blackwood Stars players. This is the first time Blackwood Stars have played Pontypool Utd in a competitive match
From the kick off it was evident that Pontypool Utd were a well coached and structured team with experienced players. This did not effect the Stars players who were courageous and committed in defense. A number of penalties were exchanged and Pontypool Utd led 6-3 at half time.
Unfortunately the Stars let in 2 quick tries at the start of the 2nd half. Stars replied with a penalty leaving the score 16-6 to Pontypool Utd after about 15 minutes. Pontypool continued to attack the Stars without success, however the Stars eventually folded and let in another 2 tries 30-6 to Pontypool. The Stars did not give up and tight head Marc Bolton showed tremendous pace to run 10 meters and with 2 Pontypool defenders on his back he managed to score a consolation try in the corner making the final score 30-11
The Stars performance was fantastic against a side a league higher then them. The entire team played their heart out and the club is very proud of the effort and commitment they put in.
Gavin McDonnell was man of the match. He run his heart out all game, did not miss one tackle and was the best player on the park. Well done Gmac.
Stars next game is against Newport High School Old Boys away on 7 November. This is a game the Stars must win to keep the momentum going.
Stars together stronger.
