Starts travelled to RTB Ebbw Vale expecting a competitive game. The game didn’t disappoint as both teams started strong. RTB started strongly but the stars defense held out in our 22 with Matthew Dix at the heart of the defense. Both Dan Evans and Nathan Hughes clearing our lines and putting pressure on the RTB back three.
For the first 20 minutes the Stars were very energetic with the team doing the basics well, forwards making ground for the back to throw the ball around and find gaps in the RTB defense. Resulting in a try from a quick penalty from Martin Gower to get in behind the defense giving the backs room to run a move putting Gavin Bolton over in the corner.
25 minutes in to the game injuries started to hinder the stars with Dan Evans and Brad Jones having to go off and Martin Rush struggling with injuries but showing grit and determination continuing to play. As the game went on and RTB started to find their flow scoring 2 tires very quickly. The Stars didn’t allow their heads to drop as the continued to pit pressure on but coming up short.
With the stars behind the last thing we needed was another injury. Aled Hughes having to go off the Stars had to play with 14 men due to not having any more front row cover. RTB Scored two more tries and a penalty taking the score to 32-5
The theme of the game continued as Tom Rees who came on as a sub went down with an ankle injury and the Stars not being allowed to make anymore subs, Aled stepped up telling the coaches he will go back on rather than see the boys go down to 13 men.
A lot of positives has been taken away from the game as it was a big step in the right direction. Man of the Match - Aled Hughes
