A good crowd gathered to watch Stars play New Tredegar in the 2nd round of the SWALEC bowl cup. It was another early kick off due to Wales playing in the quarter final of the world cup later in the afternoon. It was a lovely autumn day and good conditions for an open game of rugby.
Stars started really well and took New Tredegar by surprise probably because they were still suffering from their 5 mile bus trip from New Tredegar. Nathan Hughes kicked 3 penalties in the first 20 minutes to put the Stars in front by 9 nil. There was then some tension amongst the forwards which the referee sorted, warning the individuals concerned. This effected the Stars more than New Tredegar who scored 2 quick tries mainly due to some sloppy play be the Stars. The New Tredegar centre then made a blatant late tackle which the Stars players reacted to. The referee dealt with the matter and yellow carded the New Tredegar centre. Unfortunately the Stars did not take advantage of the one man advantage and let in another try. The score was 17-9 at half time.
Again the Stars started well and took the game to New Tredegar and played some good rugby in patches. Within 10 minutes the Stars scored a well worked try. Sublime skill by the Stars captain Matthew Dix off loading to Ross Martin to score unopposed in the corner. Nathan Hughes kicked a difficult conversion; the score was now 17-16 to New Tredegar and the Stars could smell victory.
The Stars continued to attack New tredegar but couldn't get over the white wash. They let in another try late in the game and New tredegar was worthy winners 24-16.
Discipline cost the Stars victory and work needs to be done in training to sort out discipline issues. Outside Half Dan Evans was awarded man of the match for a well orchestrated performance.
