Stars welcomed Cwmcarn to Libanus for the first round of the Bowl cup. Stars have not played Cwmcarn for a number of years; the last time the two sides met was when both played in the old Gwent District leagues.
Cwmcarn play in Division 3D East which is a number of leagues below the league the Stars play in. For this reason a number of Stars players did not take the game seriously and was out until the early hours of Saturday morning celebrating early the Welsh victory that was to come later in the day.
Stars started well with Matthew Davies catching the ball from the kick off and setting up the first try. The Stars carried on this good work scoring a number of tries and leading 36 nil at half time.
Cwmcarn rallied well in the second half and the late night took its toll on a number of Stars players. The final score was 65-10 and Cwmcarn provided stern opposition especially up front and the Stars need to ensure they are more focused for their league game next week against Chepstow.
A number of players put in good performances: Martin Gower and Nathan Richards continually made a number of long carries with Martin scoring 4 tries; Martin Rush steadied the ship well and Nathan Hughes had an excellent all round game except perhaps his place kicking; both Adam Perry and Matthew Davies performed well in their first games of the season.
The man of the match went to Marc Bolton for the commitment he provided throughout the game.
